Module Outreach
Science communication is an essential skill for doctoral researchers in the field of data science in order to make the social relevance of their research visible. The ability to communicate complex scientific content in a way that is appropriate for the target audience not only promotes dialog with the public, but also interdisciplinary collaboration and the impact of scientific findings. Training courses in the areas of outreach and science communication impart sound knowledge of presentation, narrative structuring, and media work - skills that are increasingly in demand in non-scientific contexts. By actively engaging with these topics, doctoral researchers can position their research in a sustainable way and contribute to strengthening trust in science.
As part of its doctoral training program, the MDSI offers one-day workshops specifically for doctoral researchers in the field of data science who want to improve their skills in communicating scientific content to non-academic target groups. Participants will:
- Understand key principles of effective and ethically responsible science communication,
- learn to adapt language and content to different non-scientific contexts
- gain more confidence in presenting their research publicly and online, and
- complete the course with three directly applicable communication formats.
To complete the Outreach module of the MDSI Doctoral Training Program, attendance at a one-day course is mandatory. Such courses are offered once a year (in 2025: “Pitch, Post, Repeat: Communication and Outreach for Data Scientists”). Further outreach activities, such as participation in public events, presentations in schools, or journal articles, can be recognized as an option.
