Start of the METEOR Research Training Group
News, Top |
“Our mission is to advance artificial intelligence and autonomous systems by synergetically exploiting control theory and machine learning through the unifying perspective of dynamical systems,” highlights the METEOR Co-speaker and MDSI Core Member Prof. Sandra Hirche the vision of the research training group. “By fostering this integration in both, research and education, METEOR aims to pioneer new interdisciplinary approaches for trustworthy AI and strengthen the Bavarian AI ecosystem."
Besides Prof. Hirche, the MDSI Core Members Prof. Massimo Fornasier and Prof. Christian Kühn are among the Principal Investigators at the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology at TUM.
Unifying machine learning and control theory
In light of the current challenges in the field of artificial intelligence, the DFG Research Training Group METEOR is dedicated to unifying machine learning (ML) and control theory (CT) and strengthening the interaction between the two disciplines. Despite common interests and methods, the two fields have developed different languages and cultures, largely independently of each other. The combination of the learning-centered, data-driven approach of ML and the primarily model-based perspective of CT appears highly promising but requires scientists with expertise on both sides.
The core objective of this RTG is to bridge the gap between CT and ML and to train a new generation of scientists at that intersection for complex dynamical systems, advancing research through exploring synergies, complementarities, and mutual benefits of both fields. Such scientists are urgently needed to face the challenges of modern AI research and to establish data-driven discovery as the “fourth paradigm” of scientific discovery.
