MDSI brings together researchers from different disciplines in the fields of data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence and promotes interdisciplinary exchange between disciplines in these areas. To this end, specialist expertise is to be networked both within TUM and with selected international experts, in order to shed light on existing and potential future topics from different perspectives and to promote transdisciplinary approaches and collaborations.
MDSI workshops are exploratory in nature. They bring together a small number of TUM researchers and selected external experts to discuss topics related to data science and its applications from a multidisciplinary perspective and to develop creative approaches to respond to common challenges.
MDSI sponsors core member workshops typically lasting half a day to two days. Funding details can be found on the internal wiki pages. Please feel free to direct questions about this to info(at)mdsi.tum.de.
Exploring New Grounds: Workshops for Doctoral Students & Postdocs
In addition, MDSI looks to support young researchers in exploring academic and entrepreneurial topics off the beaten track of their primary research agenda. Teams of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers can apply for funding to organize a workshop that brings together young scholars and experts for in-depth discussions.

MDSI Retreats bring together a small group of MDSI Core Members, PI’s and other TUM researchers plus selected international experts to work on a chosen topic. Typically, retreats last between two to five days and offer the opportunity to creatively approach a topic or question. The closed setting allows for prolonged immersion and aids in identifying new focus topics, designing new approaches to interdisciplinary research fields, or collating expertise related to existing focus topics.
