SLICES-DE - Scientific Large Scale Infrastructure for Computing/Communication Experimental Studies
SLICES-DE is a modular digital research infrastructure and the German contribution to the European SLICES-RI initiative, which involves a total of 16 countries. The Technical University of Munich (TUM) serves as the host institution for SLICES-DE, coordinating both the strategic direction and the technical development of the platform within Germany. SLICES-DE is part of the German Roadmap for Large-scale Research Infrastructures, underscoring the project’s long-term significance for Germany as a premier research location.
The platform provides ICT researchers with access to a specialized experimental environment for future technologies such as 6G, AI, and quantum computing. The foundation of SLICES-DE is built upon three central pillars:
- Reproducibility: Through structured and automated workflows, SLICES-DE ensures that experiments can be repeated under identical conditions. This guarantees the scientific reliability and validity of research results.
- Blueprints: These constitute a crucial component by providing standardized reference experiments for various communities within ICT research. For instance, the AI and 6G communities receive tailored templates that facilitate a rapid start into complex experimental setups and establish a shared research basis.
- Data Management: With the support of the MDSI, SLICES-DE is pursuing the development and implementation of an advanced concept for the handling and preservation of research data. The objective is the long-term archiving of experimental data to make it accessible to the scientific community. In doing so, the highest German and European data protection standards are strictly maintained. By implementing the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), the platform further enables the effective and sustainable reuse of data for the entire research community.
SLICES-DE thus bridges the gap between state-of-the-art network infrastructure and data-centric science for German universities, research institutions, and industry partners.
