TUM GNI Director receives prestigious EG-ICE Prize

At the General Assembly of the European Group for Intelligent Computing in Engineering (EG-ICE) held in London on July 6th, Prof. Ian Smith, Director of TUM GNI, was honored with the EG-ICE Prize in recognition of his substantial contributions to the field of intelligent computing in engineering – a distinction awarded only three times in the 30-year history of the group.

Ian Smith has worked as a researcher and professor at the intersection of structural engineering and computer science since the 1980s focusing on measurement systems, structural fatigue, fracture mechanics, and artificial intelligence at renowned institutions, including the University of Cambridge, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Carnegie Mellon University, USA, and the ETH Future City Laboratory in Singapore. He has headed a number of chairs and groups associated with intelligent computing in engineering and is the current Director of TUM GNI. He was elected to the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (2004), received the Computing in Civil Engineering Award from the ASCE in 2005, and was elected to the National Academy of Construction, USA in 2022. Finally, he is a co-author of the textbook, Engineering Informatics: Fundamentals of Computer-Aided Engineering, Wiley.
