From June 16 to 18, 2025, twelve schoolgirls in grades 10 to 13 had the opportunity to find out more about studying computer science at the Technical University of Munich. They took part in the three-day Computer Science Schnupperstudium during their Pentecost vacation.
Exciting days with lots of input
In workshops organized by our MDSI Core Members Prof. Jana Giceva and Prof. Debarghya Ghoshdastidar, as well as Prof. Stephan Krusche and many more, the participants were able to gain initial experience in the areas of algorithms, software engineering, and data science. They had hands-on experience in sorting algorithms, programming their own app, making binary bracelets, and exploring various datasets with an online data tool.
A highlight of the event was a panel event at the Munich Data Science Institute (MDSI), where they heard experiences of senior female students from different study phases - from Bachelor's to Master's to PhD - as well as a professor, all sharing their personal path into computer science, as well as research insights.
In addition, the girls got to know details of the study program, met with various student initiatives and clubs at TUM, took part in a real computer science lecture and explored the Garching campus. They also had the chance to exchange with MDSI Core Member Prof. Donna Ankerst, Dean of Talent Management and Diversity at the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology, and enjoyed networking over lunch in the student cafeteria.
CS Schnupperstudium @ TUM
The program offers high school girls the chance to experience life as a computer science student at TUM. Usually, the annually held program takes place over three days during the Pentecost vacation (BY and BW). The participating girls attend lectures and workshops on various areas of computer science, meet like-minded peers, and explore the TUM Campus Garching. Discussions with current students and faculty provide a behind-the-scenes look at university life.
